The Mediterranean Diet:
There are some who say there's no such thing as a Mediterranean diet because the Mediterranean has 16 different countries which border it. Clearly diets differ from one country to another however Pastene looks primarily at the Italian diet and our products in relation to a generalized reference to a Mediterranean diet.
The Mediterranean diet consists of a healthier balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and many studies have shown that people who follow this diet are less likely to develop heart disease. The Mediterranean diet does not include much meat (which is high in omega-6 fatty acids) and emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption. While omega-3 acids may not be essential to the diet, scientific evidence indicates they may be beneficial in reducing coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least 2 times a week.
The diet isn't just a matter of consuming certain foods; it's a lifestyle that promotes daily exercise. Italians have been dealing with high gas prices for a lot longer than the US and walking to work or to the store is the norm.
